We’ve heard about a lot of spin-off projects at HBO based on the George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones universe. So far, only House of the Dragon has seen the light of day. There’s news, however, that HBO is considering another show (and potentially a movie?) about the king who started the Targaryen dynasty in Westeros.
According to Variety, HBO is working on a Game of Thrones project based around Aegon I and his two sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, taking over Westeros with their respective dragons. The events take place approximately three-hundred years before the beginning of the original series, and two-hundred years before House of the Dragon (pictured above).
The project is still in the very early days so there’s not even a writer attached yet, but Variety’s sources are teasing that the project might start with a feature film that would lead into a series, though nothing is confirmed. Whatever format the show takes, there will at least be three dragons involved, so that’s something.
This King Aegon I project is far from the only spin-off in consideration at HBO. There’s a Jon Snow series in the works along with at least three other live action projects and at least one other animated series. None of these, however, are in the production stage so it’s unclear what will eventually make its way to completion. House of the Dragon, however, will be back with a second season at some point with a new co-showrunner on board.
